ABOUT
Lloyd Hicks
My ambition is to make a difference in the world we live in by using my two decades of expertise to solve our most complex sustainability challenges and help businesses operate within our planetary boundaries, while also preventing a shortfall in the social foundation that ensures a safe and just space for humanity to thrive in.
My strengths lie in my skills in defining client needs, research and ideation, and my strong hypothesis-driven approach to problem solving – all driven by my early career as a product designer. My specialties are in food systems and sustainable agriculture; climate mitigation and nature-based solutions; sustainable supply chains and circularity; and impact investing.
I joined Systems7 in May 2022, where I have been helping develop ESG impact strategies for private equity portfolio companies across three different sectors. A large part of my work is during ‘Impact Sprints' where we align leadership (and the wider team) around the role of impact in building commercial success and then provide support in identifying meaningful impact targets and KPIs.
Before joining Systems7, I worked at an Anglo-Nordic advisory firm, where I designed and facilitated collaborative workshops with stakeholders using design-thinking tools; created and led leadership development programs; and developed climate mitigation and sustainable business strategies. Here I led global clients in more than a dozen industries through complex challenges to achieve sustainability goals. I worked with senior leadership at four of the largest global energy companies on climate mitigation strategies, now leaders in large-scale renewables and transport electrification. I led senior leaders in a global logistics firm through a speculative futures process to identify new sustainable business models. I facilitated multiple multi-stakeholder workshops for a major retail giant on the shift to plant-based diets and product service systems. I created and led a leadership development program at a leading FMCG company across its global operations to introduce and apply tools such as horizon scanning, system mapping, and backcasting.
Prior to this, I worked with US-based sustainability advisory firms (Forum for the Future and SustainAbility Institute); as an adjunct professor at Pratt Institute and The New School where I created a course on sustainability and taught eco-design principles and life cycle assessment methodology; a non-profit where I directed a program focused on the passage of environmental laws in NYC and the US as a specialist in Extended Producer Responsibility; and design firms IDEO and Continuum.
Outside of work, I spend my spare time thinking about and designing a commercially viable, ‘food forest’ model in upstate New York where I live with my family.
